Richard Hammond Unveils The Carphone Warehouse Appys

2011 News

February 21st, 2011

Richard Hammond has today unveiled the shortlist of app nominees for the first ever Carphone Warehouse Appys. A panel of expert judges, including Richard Hammond, have selected fifty nominees, which will now fight it out for the public vote in order to win an inaugural Carphone Warehouse Appy Award. Richard will be joined on stage by Amanda Byram to host a prestigious ceremony on 11 April 2011 where the winners will be unveiled.
The nominations process began with employees of The Carphone Warehouse using their passion and expertise to submit over 1,000 of their favourite apps to a panel of expert judges. The panel, consisting of Richard Hammond, Simon Oliver, the first British app millionaire; Carrie Longton, co-founder of Mumsnet; Andrew Harrison, CEO of Best Buy Europe and Tom Guy, Head of Digital Services at The Carphone Warehouse, then sampled and reviewed all the entries to come up with the final list of nominees.  Now, it is down to the Great British public to back their favourites and place a vote for the apps they deem most deserving of the coveted awards. Voting opens at midday on 21 February, and votes can be placed online via, or through The Carphone Warehouse Appys app, which is available across Apple, Android immediately with both BlackBerry and Nokia to follow.
In addition, the judges will be responsible for the final category, named ‘Judge’s Choice’, which will see the judge’s favourite app crowned the overall winner.
Richard Hammond said, “I use apps every day – they help me lots of different situations, from staying entertained on set to finding out useful information when I’m on the go. They’ve become such a big part of daily life, and it’s time that the best ones receive recognition. The last few weeks I’ve been glued to my smartphone trialling hundreds of different apps and trying to decide which should be on the shortlists. It was a really tough job, but I’m confident in our selection and think

everyone will find a few of their favourites in there. I’m only glad it’s the public deciding the winners, not me!
Andrew Harrison, CEO of Best Buy Europe, said, “Our team at The Carphone Warehouse did a brilliant job in suggesting over a thousand apps for us to consider. Our customers are always asking us which are the best apps, so we’re especially pleased we’ve been able to draw up a definitive list.  We’re now calling on the Great British public to cast their vote and decide on the winners. We’re all getting very excited about seeing who they’ve selected at the first ever Carphone Warehouse Appys Awards Ceremony in April.”
